DC Motor Controls

DC motor speed control is perhaps the most common manipulation used in DC controllers. This speed can be controlled in four different ways: flux variation, armature voltage variation, a change in the supply voltage, and pulse width modulation (PWM). PWM is the technique commonly used for achieving speed control in a DC motor. It delivers energy through a series of pulses rather than a continuous signal. By altering the pulse width, the DC motor controller is able to regulate the energy flow to keep it consistent. 

While less popular, DC motor torque control is achieved by a DC motor drive regulating the armature current. Since the armature current isn’t regulated, the motor can operate at whatever speed necessary to achieve the desired torque level. The torque level can remain constant achieving a “taper tension effect” for a fixed input reference and torque mode center winders. However, the machine operator can in some circumstances increase the torque set-point as diameter increases.
